How Far Will you Go to introduce Jesus?

How Far Will you Go to Introduce  Jesus?

I must at admit coming into this weekend I was not prepared for any bible study.  I wanted to take this opportunity to make this more of a sharing experience.  So Trinity UMC decided to go to the beach this weekend and what a crazy idea that turned out to be.  Temperature was at least at the 50's and the wind made it even colder.  Our little bonfire was not enough keep us all warm.  But we enjoyed the time we spent together anyway.

After wards we all descended to Crystal's place and had our lock in.  It gave us a chance to unwine and relax and I got the opportunity to try and get to know as many of the members as I could. It was definitely worth it.

But what capped it off was today when Rev. Max Dumlao shared a very powerful sermon about the totality of God's love must be reciprocated by the totality of our love by being in service of others.  And at that moment the Lord spoke to me and told me exactly what He wanted me to share for today's bible study.  Found in Mark 2: 1-12 and it says,

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed ManA few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
There was a few things that we as a group highlighted.  How Jesus had the authority of forgiving sins because He was the fulfillment of the law as it is written in Matthew 5:17 and it says,
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.

Meaning that law was written to try and bring man back to the Kingdom of God but it was not enough according to the book of Romans 8:3-4 which reads
For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[a] God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.[b] And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
But I believe the story really starts with the friends who cared enough about their friend that when they heard that a man that has the power to heal was in town they took their paralyzed friend and took him to see Jesus.  Not might be too much for our standards but remember this was during the days of no cars and they walked everywhere they needed to go.  After getting there, they noticed a large crowd and there was no way to bring their crippled friend in and instead of giving up the friends decided to not only cut a whole in the roof but to carry their friend on top of the roof and gently lower him down to Jesus for they knew that Jesus can heal their friend.  This to me is what it means to love your neighbor as to love yourself.  Many would have tried to get Jesus to go to their crippled friend, but instead they carried him.  Many would have turned back the moment the line gotten too long instead they carried him on the roof and cut a hole.

Today we have the luxury of cars and all the technologies that our generations enjoy yet how many of us have made the excuse as to why we do not bring a friend to Church or to bible study or a beach bonfire day even though it the middle of November?  To truly show love for our friends we must stop at nothing to introduce them to Jesus Christ.

Full Man and Full GOD

Today's Youth/Young Adult Bible Study we explored the temptation of Jesus in the Wilderness.  The significance of this story and as to why we need to learn it.

When Jesus was lead to the wilderness by the Spirit it was at this time the devil was given permission by GOD to temp Jesus.  And the devil being clever knew that this was the only time that GOD was going to give him a chance to temp and change the salvation story.  The story of how much GOD loves His people.

But Jesus being more clever took this opportunity though to further His ministry.  The restoration of God's kingdom.  By allowing Jesus to be tempted it shows us again how our one TRUE GOD is truly different from all the false gods out there.  Our GOD would turn himself into a full man just so we can relate to him. And at the same time being full GOD so he can be the bridge that connects us again to GOD the Father.  And at the cross he DIED for all our sins so that his blood will pay what we owe and be part of the Kingdom of GOD once again.

Thank you JESUS for being a man and GOD all at once.

The Guidelines for Bible Study

Wow, I haven't posted in this blog for some time now.  But then again I haven't really lead a new group of Bible Study programs but starting at Trinity UMC I have three Bible Study groups.  One for Young Adults on Friday and One on Sunday and One for Vesper Service on Sunday Evenings.

I know that my style of teaching is not everyone's cup of tea.  But I believe in leading them to the answer instead of giving them the answer.

The discovery of the Word of God is such a wonderful experience.  Every time I learn something new about the Bible or the Lord's message I am blown away by the multi-dimensional depth of the scripture.  Learning the whole context (or as much as you can) can add so much more of an understanding to the word of GOD.

Here are some guidelines when your in my group:

  1. The scripture was designed to be heard not read.  The Holy Scripture was heard first not read.  That is why in Matthew 11:15 talks about those who have an ear let them hear.  It does not mean that a Bible is NOT needed you will eventually read the scripture but I encourage all to hear it first.
  2. Use a BIBLE not an iPad or any digital book version if you can
  3. Take off your 21st century glasses and put on the glasses of the time when it was written.  For example,  Matthew was written specifically for the Jews but not just the Jews but the Jews that lived on the 1st century.
  4. NO SUNDAY SCHOOL ANSWERS: Your answers needs to be supported based on the scripture.
I'm sure there are more things that I have put on here and these might change or evolve to something else as time progress.  But these are the guidelines for now.

I am not trying to give you the answer I am trying to give you a path to discovery.  God shows us things that He wants to show us and will unfolds as when GOD believes when we are ready.  And things will be seen when GOD says your ready.

That's my guideline, will be posting more soon.  Thanks and GOD BLESS....

  • Another member of our group is feeling lonely, so let us pray that that person's loneliness be short lived as we are here for that person and more importantly GOD is always with that person.

Stressing OUT

Life is full of stress, with all this technologies that suppose to save us some time and make our lives more convenient. I can remember that when life was conducted without cell phones. I don't even know how business was done with out those little suckers. But somehow they were able to do it. In the Philippines almost every other FIlipino had a cell phone texting away like there lives dependent on it. And I admit I love gadgets, ask anyone who has known me for a while now. I always want the latest technology again trying to save time and be more efficient. But where does all that time go?

Now this blog is not about bashing technology for I believe that technology that brings GLORY to GOD is an awesome thing. I mean typing this out on an online blog were potentially millions of people can read is something that only JESUS was able to accomplish.

But yet stress is still a part of our lives. Again where is all that time we saved by having a cell phones, or a car or an iPod? I see people are stressing out more and more yet isn't the purpose of technology was to make our lives easier?

"One hand full of rest is better than two fists full of labor and striving after wind."
-Ecclesiastes 4:6

God has given us the answer to our stress, take all that time you saved by having those things to get some rest.  Do things for yourself even if it's just a little.

May the Peace of GOD come over your heart....

In HIS Service,
Francis Thomas B. Serrano
